Megathread - 🔥 Dividend Fest 🔥

Had a look at this one recently. Too much capital loss for me.

Please check The Average Joe Investor channel on YouTube. He has published plenty of videos analyses of Global X ETFs based on the covered call strategy and QYLD in particular (dollar denominated version of of QTLP).

Somebody advised to check it on the T212 Forum as QYLD is not what is seems. It may turn out to be a disappointment on the long run, if you look for some degree of appreciation.

Thanks @Simon3, I will check out the channel.

Certainly will be going into QYLP with open eyes, the high yield is already a bit of a flag but am aware that capital appreciation is unlikely to be a key factor for this ETF. May just allocate a smaller amount (not all the funds I will get from BCPT) just to see how it goes.

Thanks for that @Simon3 , I’ve watched a couple of videos but hadn’t come across this one yet.

A couple of lessons learnt - they execute via European options process, rather than US options process which makes it less volatile and that the lack of capital appreciation can be quite significant, compared to a growth equity.

As mentioned, I’m unlikely to hold a large position, will just go small to see how it goes.

Ultimately, I try to exercise a 6% holding cap on any individual income paying investment in my portfolio, to try to balance things out.

I’m hoping to do experiment with covered calls myself at some point to see if I can eke out a bit more income.

I’m not a div investor but for the divs I got I’m happy I remember I got £1.34 my first year in 2021 lol

But I’m picking stuff now for divs for the isa still sticking with etfs and all that and not going as hard as the people above but I’m happy with that plan so fsr.

The SIPP seems best placed for etfs and companies that reinvest the divs for you.

From a dividend perspective I always find the compounding investor updates inspiring and enjoy his content.

Accumulation stage - Dividends are all well and good providing your capital doesn’t erode, otherwise is a null sum game.

De-accumulation stage - Dividends IMO appear to be a fantastic way of receiving income whilst never needing to actively sell any shares, I’m not at this stage yet.

Alot of people use dividends as a motivational tool to keep investing in the accumulation phase, regardless of total return.

ISA dividends for September:

[Context - Portfolio size around £72k, been investing since 2015]

Average yield currently running at around 6.1%.

Progression over the years:

First time in years I don’t have a monthly payment from Balanced Commercial Property Trust (BCPT) as I have now sold, but I will replace with another monthly payer(s).

Hope you all had a good dividend month.

@NeilR - I too enjoy the Compounding Investor videos for inspiration - had I begun investing earlier (in my 20s, instead of in my 40s), I think I would have aimed for a far bigger dividend paying portfolio.

What was your reason for selling this one?

The board of BCPT recommended in September to sell the company to a private investment company, so I decided it was time to exit.

Oh I see, that’s a pretty decent reason. Those companies can be real hit or miss. Was it a VC type firm? A lot of them seem to just bleed companies dry and run them on skeleton crews

Starwood Capital, a US company which specialises in real estate. And yes, I made my decision only because I have heard of what can happen after these sales/takeovers so didn’t want to take the risk as BCPT was one of my larger holdings.

It could be that the new BCPT may end up performing even better but who knows.
