We need your help! Fractional Shares in ISAs

If fractionals are brought in I hope you can still buy whole shares

Yeah I love not having to mess around with values and just select a whole share.

Weā€™ll be keeping the ability to toggle between whole shares and buying by a Ā£ amount!

On ETFs and U.K. fractions that will take some engineering work. Weā€™ll look at that once we have clarity about the rule change.

I would love to have whole shares in a SIPP too
Can that be considered by the product team please

Youā€™re able to toggle to buy either by Ā£ amount or by whole shares in your SIPP and GIA right now!

With no fractional shares in ISAs is it possible to set recurring orders to number of shares rather than %s

Just before Labour end up getting in and the whole thing gets scrapped. Great.

Why Labour doesnā€™t like fractional shares tho? Thanks to fractional shares (e.g. in ISA) stock investment become more accessible to a wider population. Labour should like this ā€œsocialistā€ idea haha

@LTinvestor while I can see your point.

Stock market investing is at its core a economically conservative thing and certainly not much of a socialist kinda thing.

Even investing in environmentally friendly companies is still a bit more economically conservative.

Whether Labour (at the moment) are truly socialist or not is another debate for another day

But I canā€™t see stock market investing and socialist financial policy being two peas in a pod

Thank you for your comment, very informative! Sometimes I got confused by todayā€™s meaning of a word. Like you say, investing in environmentally friendly companies seems to me is very progressive, but it may still be too ā€œconservativeā€ for Labour.

And Labour (as well as Democrats in the US) appear to enjoy taking all the ā€œgood wordsā€ like progressive, liberal which somehow may creates a ā€œbetter imageā€. Left or Right seems a more natural term to me. Anyways, happy investing!

Hello All

It was previously communicated that the option to invest in fractional shares would be reintroduced. The passing of the April budget has been and gone, and it was mentioned several months before that.

Please can someone provide any new information regarding this matter?

Thanks

Toby

Where was this communicated? With an election on the horizon I cant see any movement on this for a while.

Hi all,

Just to clarify given the election has been called all ongoing policy changes (including the work on fractions in ISAs) has been put on hold. Weā€™re picking this up in earnest with the key political parties to make sure that the changes are brought forward later on this summer as planned.

Best,
Alex

Hi All, first post!
This post is about when Freetrade will return to fractional shares.

Currently they advertise as being possible (Fractional shares - Over 6,000 US stocks to buy from | Freetrade), but I guess this non-ISA(?).

Thereā€™s a lot of conflicting info on this online about whether fractional shares are allowed in ISA. Some articles stating they are not allowed others saying they have been permitted for this FY. Be good to know (i) when / if things might change (ii) if this is a Freetrade (implementation) delay or policy (iii) is there a roadmap or next steps.

Thanks

Hi @rmorris

Welcome

Iā€™ve moved your post to this existing thread that has the latest. Currently we have paused trading in fractional shares in ISA accounts due to the ongoing discussions about updating or clarifying the ISA rules.

We were hopeful this was moving towards a swift conclusion, but things have been paused since the election has been called (nothing gets done when an election campaign is on!).

Once we have clarity we will likely turn fractional shares back on in ISA accounts as soon as we can. For the moment, you can buy fractions in your GIA and/or SIPP account.

Hope that helps but shout if you have any further questions!

Initially, I believed I would be fine, but in practice, investing for a better retirement has become significantly more challenging. While I consider myself skilled at investing, the companies I prefer to invest in are now beyond my reach.

Although Index Funds serve their purpose, there exist exceptional individual stocks with strong overall reputations that warrant long-term holds. Certain banks, for example are undoubtedly lifelong investments or rather until retirement comes.

Hi Alex,

Im new to freetrade and decided to move to the freetrade platform based on the user being able to purchase fractional shares. From reading all the comments around this it sounds like this is out of freetrades hands and you guys are doing everything you can to motivate the various goverment authorities to change regulation. I guess I just wanted to say thank you for the efforts by the freetrade team to date and please can I request you provide an update to us on when we have fractional shares available again in our ISA? Will there be a email communication to all usser?

I think for young people its a great way to encourage saving for the future, making it accessible to all.

Thanks
Jason

Hi @Jasonmarsh

Thanks for your note. Yes we are carrying on work with the new government to get the ISA rules clarified. As soon as this is resolved we will communicate with ISA customers about when they will be able to buy fractions again.

Best,
Alex
