What happens if you own emerging markets ETFs. Can this affect you in this instance?

I’m fine, still in the green.

Not worth looking at it daily thesedays.

bought IWDG @ 7.80 with limit order

Yep, see even today the case of Napster. I think whats shocking is how quickly its gone downhill. Would ARM for example even consider listing in London again?

I would hope that EM ETF’s should (in theory) be relatively diversified, so should be able be weather this kind of situation should it happen, plus not all Chinese stocks have such restrictions on foreign investment. Eitherway I would expect some sort of drop in the price if it happened.

Plenty of institutions and funds may be “bullish” on stocks like Alibaba at the moment, but also remember they may have other avenues available to them for investing in chinese stocks that retail investors here may not always be privy to, and so, may be better able to take advantage of the situation.

The main point that I was making (or trying to make) is that when you are investing in a Chinese company using a VIE to list on another exchange, you are not investing in the company itself, and this is something that should be taken into account when you buy.

Ultimately though, it’s down to yourself and what your apetite for risk is. For me, the risk element takes it outside of my comfort zone.

At present I don’t hold any Chinese companies as individual companies and my only exposure to China is via £VFEM and £EMIM.

I was aware of things like this and while I admit I didnt know the full story back then I was aware that investing in individual Chinese companies via US ADRs carried a special kind of risk.

Vanguard and iShares and the other big etf players likely have a special arrangement that retail investors don’t have access to on their own, but benefit from if the asset forms part of the ETF.

Index providers such as MSCI & FTSE have moved US listed Chinese companies to the HK listed versions. So BABA, NTES etc.

If what I suspect is a new cold (space) war then there is no reason that the CCP, who seem to have a huge western chip on their shoulder, turn your investment to zero. I feel they have tired of exporting deflation to the world. Maybe I have a chip on my shoulder to, dunno. They seem to have zero issues with rug pulls.

What happened to the desktop thread? Got a message saying it is completed and then it is locked.

Was locked, due to you know who, but seems to be open again now.

AH, should of guessed  but it has been marked completed and no more replying is allowed like when it is normally locked for abuse. Maybe an error by admin.

I was all for giving him another chance, but I’ve changed my mind. Popping up with a new username and posting the same thing 2 minutes after its been deleted and constantly tagging Freetrades directors and demanding answers to silly questions is getting pretty annoying. It’s cringeworthy really.

Omicron has mutated lots from Delta which shows how important it is to vaccinate the world because the sure fire way to stop mutations is to stop transmission. Looks so far like Omicron is will have a high rate of transmission but low lethality which combined with the lack of appetite for lockdowns could spell a better week ahead.
