What is going on today? - Megathread

Lots of my uk investment dropping today.
A reaction to a certain Boris still being sat at the top table :zipper_mouth_face:

it’s more world-wide actually, sea of reds in Europe and US futures. Even if he lost the vote, the impact would be minimum/negligible to worldwide stock market.

Weirdly enough my UK ones are all green today, apart from FTSE 100. I think if Boris lost last night’s vote we would see a bigger impact today due to the inconsistency of who would be leading the country.

I think in this geopolitical and financial environment that UK PM (unless its a total nationalise) wouldn’t really change much for the pound. Macro is full control.

Prediction: It 1.5 years time dollar will reach pound parity.

If this happens it puts UK companies in the sights of for US private equity even more than they are already. If there was a fight for Morrisons wait until Tesco or Sainsburys are on the menu.

Interesting thought

Yup looking at £2.50 a liter+ for petrol and diesil £3+

Gone be the days where we can travel and buy takeaways or stocks

High petrol prices is another way of saying go electric but I have no doubt the government will find away of extracting money out of people. Where there’s a will there’s a way

Got to replace that £26bn (2022/2023 estimate) from fuel duty somehow and the VED however much that raises
It’ll probably end up being taxed based on mileage/usage

Collect the data at MOT with new cars have to pay an upfront cost at registration.

The day will come when Prince John will instruct the Sheriff of Nottingham to impose a tax on people who travel by walking

But before they also might tax canoeting

Scotland are now trying to get people to pay to use the roads to discourage using a car…

And the UK goverment trying to impose a new road tax per miles driven + emissions…

That’ll be fun for anyone north of Glasgow and Edinburgh

Doesn’t really help when public transport services are being cut UK wide (bar London obviously)

Moving to within walking/cycling distance from work was one of the best decisions I ever made. I still use my car for other stuff but I don’t need it every day now

Same. Sometimes I even forget where my car is parked now :joy:

Especially given fuel costs the slightly higher rent to be near work - and in a nicer part of the city - 100% balances out for me.

Working from home now means I barely use my car. When I do go into the office, I could drive in, but a day-return on the bus is cheaper than parking for the day. Also means I can go to the pub after work
