Fractions for all šŸ°

The Trello implies that itā€™s for US stocks first.

LOL yup, just lookedā€¦should of looked there first!

Hopefully UK stocks and ETFs will be fractional too, it would make rebalancing so much easier.

Yes please! Make grabbing those larger stocks easier, and also just grabbing Ā£-sized lumps of thingsā€¦

Fractional shares will certainly benefit many investors, however, will there be a ā€œcostā€ to FreeTrade to implement this? For example, if I am the only person who places a Ā£1 fractional purchase for a Google share at, say Ā£1,000. Does this mean FreeTrade has to outlay the original Ā£1,000 to purchase one share while it records I hold 1/1000 of that share? Potentially, FreeTrade has a cash liability equal to the cost of one of each share for which Fractional ownership is being offered, or, are the Fractions held at a higher level than the ā€œlocalā€ nominee? Suspect the answer will not make any difference to the actual investors but am curious how the underlying mechanics would work.

I assume the counterparty risk (if thatā€™s the way freetrade goes) is maximally the sum of 0->n (share_n - smallest fractional unit).

I suppose on average you will own half a share in everything that has a fractional holding ? It will grow with number of share line items being traded but not with assets under management /volume of shares traded

There is a great thread here with lots of information about how they will work: Administering fractional shares

Thanks @zaccharles ! This thread is amazingly interesting !

If you buy a fractional share, for example you bought Ā£10 of a share worth Ā£20, then at a later date you buy another Ā£10 of the same share I assume it would show as you having a whole share. However, if that share price fell to Ā£5 before you bought the share again, would you own 2.5 shares?

I guess the question I am trying to ask is how are the fractional shares tracked over time so you know how many whole shares you own?

The proportion wonā€™t change just the value

I you bought Ā£10 of a Ā£20 share you would have half a share

If it dropped to Ā£15 and you bought another Ā£10 you would have 1/2 plus 2/3 which would be 1 and 1/6 shares or 1.166667 shares

My maths really sucked there, what a foolish mistake to make on a Monday :flushed:

That makes sense  So basically each time the price changes you will buy a different fraction of the share and the fractional shares you own sum?

Feels a bit of a desperate changelog in an attempt to placate people.

I imagine this is the version that includes the necessary changes. But on the backend they still need to activate peoples accounts. Eventually that backend toggle will he removed or on for everyone by default. At that point, the version description will make more sense.
