Tesla didn’t comment directly on the court order when contacted by CNBC, but highlighted a web page detailing its commitment to “replant an area three times the factory plot, with mixed trees native to their habitat and the potential to become an old growth forest.”
This post reminded me we don’t talk enough about the quality of the team.
3. The Employees Are Top-Notch
I’ve been blessed to be a part of some pretty awesome work squads in my life, but none have compared to the Tesla family I was a part of in Auckland. My co-workers were everything you could ask for in a team:
Welcoming
Smart
Open-minded
Scrappy
Passionate about building a brighter future.
Elon has created a management pipeline that puts a premium on folks who embody all of these characteristics, and I can confirm from personal experience: It’s paying off BIG-time.
From an investor’s point of view, it’s good to know that the Tesla team is as strong as any on Earth, and the continuous recruitment of top talent should be a breeze.
Is it still worth investing a little in Tesla at this current time. I know its seen resonable gains but don’t want to fall somewhat foul of jumping on a bandwagon or should I be looking elsewhere.
Tesla used to use NVidia’s tech for the SDC capability (for inference etc, in deep learning speak). Now they build water-cooled harware themselves inhouse (HW3 and, soon, HW4) for Autopilot.
NVidia’s next comparable chip - Orin - capable of processing a high amount of info won’t be available until 2022-2023.
Most of NVidia’s revenue comes from the gaming and data-centre business. They may be too big and too spread out to build a great HW-like chip. Also, Tesla owns the hardware and software, so know how to optimize one for another, since battery performance can be affected by power-hungry chips.
If you can go vertical, go vertical:
Most parts inside the Model 3 do not bear the name of a supplier. Instead, many have the Tesla logo, including the substrates inside the ECUs. This suggests the company maintains tight control over the development of almost all key technologies in the car.
The “old auto” is highly dependent on the supply chain network, so pivoting would be hard. Also, car manufactures mostly build hybrid/petrol/diesel-powered engines, while outsourcing most of the rest, as far as I am aware.
