Curious to hear other people’s opinion on the potential that the edible insects industry may have?
I have thought the topic of insect based protein for human and animal consumption is quite interesting for a while, there seems to be quite a few upsides to it, although consumer sentiment may not be too positive right now, in regard to human consumption anyway.
Also curious if anyone has any stock recommendations to research based on this?
If eating insects is interesting because it’s a more efficient source of protein, then you may want to look into lab grown meat, start with the Agronomics ETF, and look at some competitors. I don’t think it’s got any insect protein in it, but it’s a decent portfolio of lab grown meat companies.
I think some E numbers are already crushed insects - shellac and cochineal are from insects. Whilst people may be a little squeamish about ground bugs being added to bread flour they are already in other foods.
Plant based products are probably more marketable in the medium term but possibly there’s room for insect based food to grow, especially if it’s in a form that doesn’t look like an insect. Would be interesting what options are being explored.
This is an interesting area to watch in the future when looking at food security/agriculture/environment. If you like vertical farming for fruit/veg, there seems to be a few companies doing just that but for insects. I do think in western society, it will be a tough sell/change to introduce insects into diets without a whole load of processing. Ie. insects into powders (protein shakes).
Focusing on insects to feed livestock in many industries would be targeting all areas I mentioned above. There’s a lot to say about this topic amongst other topics also. What are everyone’ else’s thoughts?
