In addition to what @liiive said about spending, the killer feature for me is the ability to receive payments. I did some work for a client in the USA last year, and through Transferwise I was able to give them a real US bank account number to pay into, the money appeared in my Transferwise account, and I could then convert it to pounds and send it to my UK bank. This was really useful because (a) Americans are rubbish at dealing with international money transfers, they really have no clue how to deal with world outside the US, so giving them a US bank account number made things much simpler, and (b) the transaction costs were much cheaper than wire transfer fees and the fees my UK bank would have charged to receive and convert the money.
