They mention shares/ETFs but not sure if both would be out this month. I only care about ETFs
It’s nice to have fractional shares especially for Amazon and Alphabet but I miss buying 1 share. Today I spent a fraction on a share and put all my small change in. There were a few issues processing but then when it went through I was -0.01 on my freetrade account. Negative. I’m not happy about going negative as that wasn’t the agreement I made when I purchased. I don’t know why I went negative. I assume that the price changed after I made the order but it is a bit of a headache and I don’t understand the implications. So then I transferred 10pound to my account to stop being negative. Yet again annoying. So what’s up with that?
Do fractional (USA) shares earn a dividend?
Yes. You get a fraction of a dividend.
This is probably because you lost the 0.45% FX fee when you made the purchase.
Alternatively it could be the spread, there are really 2 prices for an instrument:
Bid: The most someone is willing to buy at
Ask: The lowest someone is willing to sell at.
The Ask must be Higher than the Bid (or they would have already sold) and the gap between them is the spread.
If you say the true value is halfway between the two then you always lose a very small amount (half the spread) when you buy from a seller.
Hope UK fractional shares are on the agenda. I get the argument UK stock prices are lower but for me, that’s not why I like fractional shares.
It’s because I pre-plan exactly what % of my portfolio each stock/ETFI should be and every time I go to invest I try to invest in those proportions. Which is impossible with the lack of UK fractional shares. And it leads to me constantly battling inbalances in my portfolio and means I can’t invest in all 40 of the stocks/ETFs I’m DCA’ing in, at the same time.
Is there any update on uk fractional shares/ timeframe
Sorry if this has been covered but please can we have the option to buy whole shares. For those that don’t want to that’s fine but to ignore those who do want the option doesn’t make sense because those people won’t buy stocks. I won’t buy a US stock on freetrade until we can buy whole stocks. My reasons are my own purely so that doesn’t become the debate. I really want freetrade to do well and don’t see why there should any barriers at all to stop anyone investing any money, especially as that’s the whole reason they started.
Use limit orders is currently the only way. Apparently its something they’re working on.
Any update on UK fractionals? Some ETFs starting to get expensive (looking at you NASDAQ100) on a per whole share basis so it’s becoming harder to drip feed.
Would love to hear some sort of time frame for this
If fractionals are introduced for the UK market, will we again lose the ability to buy whole shares like we did for the US market? I’d like to see the option to buy either whole or fractional.
Uk fractionals next please
I setup my first stocks and shares ISA via free trade and the app is overall really good but I didn’t expect that you can’t buy fractional ETF shares. I just wanted to put a fixed £x a week into EQQQ and VUAG without worrying about whole share prices. £258 at once for EQQQ is alot to fork out as a uni student and I heard that trading 212 provides fractional ETFs? or maybe there is a way to purchase fractional ETF shares
The Help Hub offers this answer:
To be fair I think freetrade needs to prioritize becoming profitable first.
The reason I mention this is.
I suspect freetrade will need to buy surplus of every UK ETF (or stock) and split them. I’d imagine this would be quite costly for freetrade to achieve, particularly for UK or EU assets.
For US assets DriveWealth can take that load but in the UK the custodian Freetrade nominees limited shall have to but surplus assets of everything and divvy them out into fractionals.
To put a pragmatic spin on things, yes I do think it’s something fteetrade can and should do…but i also think it might have to be delayed mid to long term until fteetrade is a bit more stabilised on its path to profitability journey.
Just my 2¢
When will you be providing fractional shares in UK trades please as your community chat says it was on the list of things to do back in July 20?
Guess it’s already there…
Would be nice to hear a update on this
