Owns two shipyards, government want to put £16.5bn into defence and shipbuilding

This discussion should be renamed to Harland & Wolff Group (HARL) following the company’s name change last year.

This is one of the most popular AIM stocks right now following the recent announcement that Team Resolute has been named preferred bidder for the MoD’s Fleet Solid Support ship programme.

It also has news coming in January on its IslandMagee gas storage project - where a judicial review will be heard in court.

Todays RNS is great news. Not quite free money for years but as good as. No wonder it jumped. Would be good to see a bit more. Always wanting more.

I’m not a big risk taker and this is my only ‘bet’ (in a small way).

My thinking? Any company that built the Titanic and survived for over a century afterwards must have something in its DNA and it’s been bailed out many times in my lifetime and has government projects …

It’s been suspended for a while now. Not looking good, is it?

As a Belfast native I see the famous Harland and Wolff cranes almost every day. They are a part of our modern heritage.

Once it was the employ of a massive part of the city, but today its business is unclear. Less ubiquitous than in generations gone by.

I hope they sort things out, but it seems far from certain.

I hope they sort it out, too, but it’s beginning to feel a bit like believing in fairies.

How Titantic shipbuilder Harland & Wolff stumbled to the brink

H&W is now in administration, apparently.

It’s hard to accept given its long history (albeit chequered), the jobs and skills that will be lost and the defence contracts (ships mainly) that could now be built be the other shipbuilding partners eg Spain.

I still want the rabbit to jump out of the hat, somehow. Maybe there are no more rabbits …

Not as an investor, just as a Belfast native.

Seems to be a real mess. So much potential but I think the only saving them would have been more massive government contracts.

Great for keeping British traditional expertise, for Belfast and for UK economy and security.

Hopefully some good for investors too.
