Monzo expanding into Europe via Ireland…like anyone with a grain of common sense!
Freetrade is special!
Did it through Sweden!
We don’t do it in normal ways!
Good memories
Article from Nov 2020:
Lets see how Monzo executes. More competition would be great for Europe.
Swedens stock market and capital markets are amongst the best in Europe - How Sweden’s stock market became the envy of Europe
Their legislation and market listing rules are a good way ahead as well (supposedly).
To quote a couple of other key points;

Over the past 10 years, 501 companies have listed in Sweden, more than the total number of IPOs in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain combined, according to Dealogic data. The UK is top with 765 listings.

Among larger investors, Swedish pension funds have long owned domestic equities. The country’s four biggest retirement schemes have roughly maintained or increased their holdings of domestic equities in recent years. In the UK, in contrast, domestic equity holdings among pension funds have plunged to about 4 per cent.
I’m not defending the choice to setup in Sweden (simply highlighting some additional info), but there is more to it than meets the eye and unless you’re fully in the know it’s easy to criticise.
I’m aware of the points you raise and none of them outweigh the negatives. After 3.5 years of close to zero growth, its fair to say we have been proven right!
What’s important now is Freetrade learns from their mistake and when they retry to break into Europe they take a sensible approach.
Luck may hand them a second chance, but they will not get a third…
Maybe in a parallel universe others would have executed better.
But I agree it’s hopefully taken as a lesson learned
I still think Monzo should try and aquire Lunar or Bunq
Like anyone that does not understand the regulatory regime and the CBI…
Are the EU expansion plans dead now?
Wow your back I feel for you,how long have you been waiting patiently to use Freetrade?
Nearly 5 years.
Quite obviously they are dead, or something would’ve happened by now. IG took over Freetrade which doesn’t fill me with confidence that Freetrade will still exist in 5 years. It might end up merging with IG’s already existing products, and Freetrade users could be migrated there. My best guess is that IG is going to shut this down as soon as they’ve taken over the valuable bits of Freetrade.
