Megathread - Crowdfunding

Yeah I agree. I think the hussle business model might be too easy to copy. I can see them doing good for some time but then their revenue will get eroded by more competition entering the space.

If you hear any crowdfunding news on Opumo, Mr&mrssmithhhotels & Vitl. Definitely let me know. Thanks for all the updates on the other crowdfunding by the way. Appreciate it.

+1 to GoodBox !

These Kebabs look :heart_eyes::heart_eyes:

Maybe it’s time for a kebab renaissance. Are people bored of middle class burgers and fast casual Italian now?

I’ve eaten at a LeBab, which is probably their closest competior.

Nothing beats German Doner though. Those who know, know.

Drygro is live. It’s a pretty interesting pitch. Anyone taking a punt?

Small Robot Company are about to do a £1m round on Crowdcube

I did their first raise and would top up on this one

DryGro is built up a lot in that pitch - they’re basically trying to industrialise the growth of a weed to a scale that economies of scale kick in and they can sell it profitably. The water claim (ā€œ99% less waterā€) makes me sceptical given that Lemna is duckweed which naturally occurs on… water. They still have to source water somehow, given they plan to grow in areas where arable land isn’t present.

If their research is good (and I’d guess it is) there’s probably something big here, but how well it can be commercialised and sold/exited remain in question.

I guess they recycle most of the water? Looks like it’s grown under covers. They probably capture water vapour and put it back in the system

Looks that way, though they do acknowledge in the discussions that sourcing water is an ongoing process depending on region, so there’s at least some outstanding challenges there - which makes the 99% less water claim subject to the condition that they can source water at the price/availability/etc they’ve planned for, and can get it where it needs to be.

I doubt it’ll be a huge issue, they’ve clearly thought about it already. But such a bold claim is always going to invite scrutiny.

Some water is still going to go out with the end product, they can’t sell it completely dehydrated and even if they did rehydrating it before use would just use loads of water anyway.

I guess what they are saying is they don’t let water soak into the ground or run off into a ditch

I will definitely be topping up too, depending on the valuation

Oval Money is now live on Seedrs https://www.seedrs.com/oval-money! I invested in the first campaign and doubled the investment rn. They closed a good partnership with Eurizon and gonna expand their market soon in Spain. Anyone else?

I’m a fan of Maroush. Had one for breakfast once!

I’ll probably be backing Oval. Not a massive amount because I don’t know Italy. I missed out on the UK fintechs, hoping to get in on some blue ocean fintech markets.

I’m an investor in Oval from an earlier round and was excited to see them raising again. However, their original email stated how oversubscribed they were so get in quick. Given that it’s surprising how slowly they are raising and I can’t help thinking they are overpriced. As a result I’m not going back in.

When is Small Robot coming to CC? Do we know?

Chunky Update

This update felt overdue - some exciting developments recently and more to come, will keep you updated

Private live

Zazu - Zambian fintech, is still plowing on in it’s private raise. invest here.

GoodClub - the sustainable online grocery shop, are doing a pre-emption/supplementary round on Seedrs, following on from their recent crowdcube campaign in case you missed it. Invest here.

Cashmere

Drinkly - On demand alcohol delivery startup, aims to deliver booze in an hour! backed by james watt (founder of Brewdog). Pre-register here.

Imminent

Farmdrop - The challenger supermarket backed by Atomico will be crowdfunding on Seedrs, it’s raise slated to be any day now…

31Dover - The Online Alcoholic drinks retailer, will go live on Crowdcube tomorrow. Will edit this post with the link when it’s available here.

Near Future

Norton motorcycles, a century old british motorcycle marque, was about to crowdfund but cancelled on day one after a mysterious investor pledged the entire campaign amount… #KeanuReeves? Anyway, they have expressed a determination to crowdfund still, albeit further down the line.

Rumours

:eyes: :speaking_head: :ear: :newspaper_roll:

Byrotation A Rental marketplace for fashion clothing, could crowdfund in the somewhat distant future. They are competing in a competition sponsored by crowdcube, known for encouraging winners/runners up to launch campaigns. Check out their site for now.

Stepladder - A fintech to help people save mortgage deposits, could also crowdfund, taking part in the crowdcube sponsored competition mentioned above! Checkout why Seedcamp, ā€˜the future YC of Europe’ (imo) invested in them here.

Cowboy - the Belgian electric e-bike startup, is rumoured to be doing a crowdfunding round… Backed by Index Ventures, alongside Accel partners, Index are irrefutably the most elite venture capital firm in Europe; a strong social proof. Pretty excited… It’s not a sure thing, but can’t say much more at this stage sorry :zipper_mouth_face:

Allplants - A Frozen Vegan meal delivery startup backed by Octopus ventures, looks set to crowdfund. Still unclear as to when or where (which platform).

Aye, will do my best, I think there’s a lot of missed opportunities in crowdfunding. For instance, Tandem Bank raised privately on seedrs in the past year, and I’m sure a few here might have invested had they only known. This issue surrounding deal access is part of what I hope to solve going forward

P.S. Development of the website continues to plow on… stay tuned

Thanks, that’s a very good update.

pea

I’ll add: The Mighty Society on Seedrs.

It’s a yellow split pea based milk alternative. Of the milk alternatives I know, only pea is on the same level of protein content as cow milk. It’s two brothers from Yorkshire, with the backing of a Geneva-based Beyond Impact vegan venture capital firm. There’s SEIS.

Of course, this is super early stage and the risk is significant.
