60 new stocks for Standard and Plus customers, including leveraged ETFs - 2 March 2023

Today we’re launching a batch of 60 stocks for customers on our Standard and Plus plans, including exchange-traded funds (ETFs), exchange-traded commodities (ETCs), and investment trusts.

You’ll notice some of these instruments ask you to answer seven multiple-choice questions before you can buy or sell them. This is what’s called an appropriateness test. It assesses your financial experience and knowledge to make sure you understand the risks involved in these specific stocks.

You will need to pass the appropriateness test to be able to trade any stocks that are considered complex. A complex instrument is a financial product that may be difficult to understand due to its structure or features. They often have different risks associated with them compared to equities. As a result, they may not be suitable for all investors and are only intended for those who can demonstrate they have the right level of experience and knowledge.

You can read more about complex instruments and appropriateness tests here.

Any complex instruments will only be available to Standard and Plus customers who pass the appropriateness test. You’ll also need to make sure you’re using the latest version of the app.

If you don’t pass the test, you won’t be able to trade complex instruments, and you will have to wait 24 hours before taking the test again. You should only take the test again if you consider yourself to have the knowledge and experience required to invest in complex instruments and understand the risks involved.

Today’s batch of instruments includes:

  • $CRUD - WisdomTree WTI Crude Oil ETC

  • $AIGA - WisdomTree Agriculture ETC

  • ÂŁLUK2 - L&G FTSE 100 Leveraged (Daily 2X)

  • $COFF - WisdomTree Coffee

  • ÂŁBERI - Blackrock Energy and Resources Income Trust Plc

We’ve been working on this functionality behind the scenes for a couple of months now!
This functionality enables us to add any leveraged ETFs, ETCs, Investment Trust onto the platform.

If you have any questions or suggestions or request for any LSE ETF to be added, please drop them down here

Well done folks. Been waiting for this for a while!

Yes, thanks

Good work guys. Happy with several items of the list.
Now about passing those 7 questions… :man_student: :woman_student:

This is awesome, thanks for your work on this feature.

It’s a well-thought out appropriateness check which actually tests knowledge too.

I was planning to open another Isa account elsewhere to access certain investment trusts in the new year, but I’ll likely be staying put now.

Hopefully, FT can add a few other trusts like MNTN/MTNC, GIF, CGI, OIG and GSF to the platform. :crossed_fingers:

This is great news. And i agree, ive done loads of appropriateness tests and that was the hardest.

Any chance getting APAX re-enabled and GSF would be great too.

Yeah, I noticed APAX and NBMI, which were previously on the platform, are not on the list. Any particular reason this for @gswaroop?

@rehpot Unfortunately these 2 didn’t meet our eligibility criteria for unadvised retail customers. But there are others that we’re trying to bring on in the next iteration.

Great work

Just curious if GSF is more complex than BSIF? If not please include GSF in the next batch.

Not sure if this is a relevant question here, but will we see after hours trading on Freetrade?

Only real worry is based around ETPs tracking the US market such as the LQQ3/ LQQS and the Nasdaq.

Generally, FED rate meetings are held at 2:30pm local time which tend to see big short term movement in the Nasdaq. If I’m not mistaken, this tends to be around 7:30pm UK time which means either we miss the trade altogether or worse, if we’re in position after close of play and the market heads in the opposite direction then you might 3x your losses.

Being able to trade on Freetrade after market hours will give us the opportunity to enter/ exit short term leveraged trades at critical times - at least for the US-based ETPs.

I know they did trials with certain people

Even closer is GRID. They are both energy storage funds with same strategies. GRID is on, GSF not. Would love to hear FT give a well reasoned justification. Neither are complex in any way.

Based on what @NeilB said here I thought reason for exclusion was that it is “complex”.
But now that has been addressed it would be interesting to know the reason for exclusion now.

It is strange. GRID seems more complex as it trades on the LSE’s specialist fund market – which is for more complex products – yet it’s on the platform and GSF’s not. I’m sure there’s a good reason though.

Thanks for flagging this one. We’re investigating this a bit further. Will keep you posted!
