2X more UK stocks šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§

One of the amazing experiences during the Free Share testing was how pleasantly surprised our community were about getting stocks, ETFs, and trusts they wouldnā€™t have considered investing in otherwise.

It was a good reminder of how essential it is to open up the entire world of investing to achieve our mission.

So today, weā€™re starting a new, big drive to bring a lot more stocks to our universe.

First up, weā€™re going to add 200 more UK stocks in the next two months, at a rate of around 20ā€“25/week. This will roughly double the number of UK equities on your app.

These will be London Stock Exchange main market stocks with a minimum market cap of Ā£800m-Ā£1b. We basically plan to cover the vast majority of the large and medium-sized equities in the UK.

Once weā€™ve run through these 200, weā€™ll start to look at more AIM stocks too.

What about the US and other overseas stocks?

This is just phase one of a big expansion of the stocks on Freetrade.

Weā€™re going to add far more US stocks too in the coming months (near the end of 2019). Itā€™ll require more backend work, so weā€™re getting started with this UK expansion right now.

A partial shot of our upcoming new roadmap. It shows only a fraction of the roadmap, a lot of features are coming up!

Some of todayā€™s newbies: REITs

Real estate investment trusts or REITs are a special kind of investment company that invests directly in property. They own huge swathes of property and collect rent, like a supersized landlord. One important rule is that they have to distribute 90% or more of their income to their shareholders so they can be an interesting option for income investors. Note that REITs usually have to pay that income in the form of a special type of dividend called ā€˜property income distributionā€™ (PID). That dividend has different tax rules and implications to normal ones. Tax on PID dividends is usually charged for most individual British taxpayers at 20%. REITs can also pay normal dividends, which are subject to the standard dividend tax rules.

Right now, you can only invest in REITs on Freetrade on your Basic Account. REITs require an extra level of tax reporting. Weā€™re working on integrating that to our ISA management, but in the meantime weā€™ve made them available for Basic Accounts.

REITs are a diverse bunch; some invest wherever thereā€™s opportunity, others focus on a specific property type. Today weā€™re adding:

British Land ā€” Diversified (commercial and residential)

Land Securities ā€” Diversified (commercial and residential)

Derwent London ā€” London only (commercial and residential)

Segro ā€” Business parks

Ah, the rich tapestry of this beautiful land! :office:

Some of todayā€™s newbies: stocks and trusts

Stocks from the London Stock Exchange main market.

Ashmore Group

Requested in the community, Ashmore Group manage funds specialising in emerging markets investments.

Foreign and Colonial Investment Trust

One of the oldest funds in the world, the F&C started off investing in UK government bonds financing various colonial enterprises. Now they select and invest in equities worldwide.

Melrose Industries

A firm that specialises in buying flailing but potentially valuable manufacturing companies and turning them around. A bit like private equity but rather than running funds, itā€™s a holding company that owns subsidiaries outright.

These are just a few of the new stocks hitting the app; there are 25 in total.

This is awesome news :raised_hands:

Is it possible to have a list of what shares get added?

Iā€™m really glad to see Freetrade increasing the pace at which new stocks are added. Any word as to if/when some of the major FTSE 100 stocks that are missing, such as BAE and IAG, will be added? (I understand that thereā€™s the added complication of nationality declaration with the aforementioned companies.)

Same here. Iā€™m only holding one or two securities with other brokers now.

One thing worth noting for anyone interested in holding Reits: I think Iā€™m right in saying that distributions are treated as property income and, outside of an Isa, theyā€™ll generally be taxed at 20%. (Iā€™m sure someone will soon correct me if Iā€™m wrong!)

They need ID checks, donā€™t think this is something that is planned to be offered soon

Thatā€™s a shame because itā€™s a poor user experience to find that major securities, which are available on nigh-on every other UK brokerā€™s platform, remain unavailable on Freetrade.

Havenā€™t checked them all, but some of these new additions have a 404 page not found to the ā€˜cost and chargesā€™ link.

I have also found that 404 error when looking on the costs and charges link.

Checking this out now, thanks for the heads up.

Update: ā€“ these will be updated shortly.

Looking forward to seeing what gets added.

Just adding some feedbackā€¦

Got a notification saying new stocks have been added, clicking it opened the app and I could see 7 newly added stocks but the rest were not visible. This community post is the only thing I can see that letā€™s me know what has been newly added.

It would be great to click ā€œsee allā€ like the other sections haveā€¦or even sort stocks by date added.

Useful article about the tax implications of REIT dividends and the reasons for it. (apologies that its from a rival brokerage :grimacing:)

Essentially as Christopher says you pay income tax on ā€˜property income distributionsā€™ that the company pays out as dividends, although these donā€™t always consist of the entirety of the dividend.

Iā€™d agree with this - got the notification on my mobile, got all excited and clicked on it ā€¦ only to be taken to the Discovery page with no real mention of what has been added.

Even coming on the forum and hunting around for five minutes, Iā€™m no clearer on whatā€™s been added.

Really pleased to see increase in stocks being added - only feedback is to shout much more transparently about what has been added!

Thanks for the feedback on the ā€˜Newly addedā€™ section. Weā€™re actively looking at this area alongside watchlist, and you can expect something new shortly in Discover.

In the meantime, weā€™ll publish the full list of new additions here each week!

Speaking of whichā€¦
