The US didn’t even have the means to test the people for the virus last I heard.
In the nicest possible way, you are on a Coronavirus specific thread, and the Coronavirus is not exactly a cheerful thing. Maybe stop following the thread if you don’t want to be saddened by it?
Safestore also doing ok
I’m not saddened by it, we just do not need to repeatedly state the obvious. Like ‘it’s just the beginning’ or ‘it’s going to get a lot worse’. We all know that. I’ve said my bit.
people are expressing their opinions. It’s going to be quite tough to enforce that everyone’s opinion must be original and is it right to stop b someone sharing their thoughts in a community forum just because someone has already had that thought.
If there is a conversation containing what could be 100 people. It’s easier just to leave than make 100 people conform to your will. Just my 2 pennys
Might be best to get back onto the topic at hand and not whether @Pazza is a heartless bastard
So stuff from this point onwards that is just mindless finger pointing in either direction will be binned off.
You can’t tell people to stop discussing the situation like that. If it bothers you, stop reading. But as it happens I think the situation is just beginning and it’s going to get worse, and I like to see what other people think as well - as degrees of worse can and do vary.
Oops, was writing this while Codf posted, sorry Codf!
I’m letting that one slip, as you were typing as I was.
But now - back on topic!
One more light hearted one before the doom and gloom sets in!

Please folks, play nice. This is my thread and it contains valuable and useful information posted by many members. We are all entitled to an opinion, just agree to disagree at times. If that’s not the case then I will have this thread removed, all info will be lost and you can start your own to ‘bicker’ on. Enough!

I’m not really interested in what is happening in the US… except when it relates to the stock market, as it has a profound effect on my direct investments and the knock on effect to the rest of the world markets.
The major concern is the fact the US does not have a ‘health system’. Instead they have a health sector made up of lots of private companies beholden to their share holders. Due to this fact there is no central authority either federal or state than can organise a co-ordinated approach and response to a major epidemic, unlike most European countries.
In the UK the chief medical officers of the 4 countries can organise a response and dictate to their respective health systems how to best tackle the outbreak. They can direct resources where they are needed in a manner that minimises the impact to society (though in this case the impact is likely to still be huge). In the US this is just not possible.
The issues in the US are further compounded by the fact that they do not have the means to collate any epidemiological data on infection rates or rates of testing, due to a lack of a centralised reporting system. Without this data they are effectively blind.
If that isn’t bad enough, there are major societal barriers to getting tested at all. Someone has to pay for the test and it is unclear on most insurance policies, if there is coverage. A further barrier is that in 37 of the 50 states they have no right to ‘sick pay’ so many people will avoid being tested, as self-isolation will mean they have no income, which many can’t afford.
What does all this add up to?.. if you thought Europe had it bad, it is going to be 10 times worse in the US. This is going to have a major impact on world stock markets for a significant period of time!

That Freetrade meetup should be postponed.
It has been cancelled: Community Meetup - March 18th - cancelled due to coronavirus precautions - #22 by cadiazm
Earlier in the thread people were saying this is a short-term thing / a dip in the market. Based on how fast this thing is spreading and the inadequate measures taken by (at least in the UK) the government to contain it, I think things are going to get a whole lot worse before they get better!
I’m thinking there’s a lot of truth to this. I’ve slowed my drip feeding into the market now as I wait for a further correction towards Q2 reports and the inevitable peak here in the UK in the coming months…
This could time quite well for the new tax year for ISAs…
