100 New ETFs Live Right Now! 30th SEPTEMBER 2020

After a huge batch of new stocks last week, we thought we would change gears and get back to the ETFs we want to add.

With this addition, we’ve also laid out in that post what the Plus and Free plan ETF universes will look like moving forward.

Free will include all available ETFs managed by iShares, Vanguard, and Invesco

Plus will include all other available ETFs - there are a few new ones we added today!

As we outlined with the Plus stocks, there are a small number of ETFs that we will eventually move to Plus. We have a list of these ETFs available here.

Remember, that if you hold one of these ETFs and you don’t want to subscribe to Plus, then you will still be able to hold or sell this ETF. The only change is that you will no longer be able to buy more shares.

Now onto the new ETFs:

About to make a few people happy with this one!

Wow! Such a regressive move to put some of the most popular ETFs behind a paywall.

I could understand it for some of the less well known ETFs just about but things like EQQQ or some of the other Invesco or SPDR ETFs
that just feels like getting people hooked in before switching them behind a paywall.

This really seems to go against the whole ethos that I though FT had of encouraging and democratising investing.

I would have left those 28 etfs in Free. same with the stocks that are already in. I can see a storm of angry comments incoming

Perhaps. But it’s clear what’s what, and actually fairly competitive all things considered

So glad to see a decent range of passive factor ETFs in there (Volatility, Quality, Value etc
), thanks a lot!

Should really help those interested in some factor / smart beta investing (myself included) to tilt their portfolio.

I get Plus for free so I’m not affected, but I do hold some of those 28 ETFs, some of them are popular ones with their own threads on this board. I think it would have been worth leaving them in free just to avoid the inevitable complaints and to maintain goodwill

I’m increasingly looking at these announcements and realising this isn’t the Freetrade I signed up for

Yes, I understand a profit needs to be made, but yeeesh. :confounded:

@acamp Can you share the reasoning behind why some are part of plus and some are still part of the free tier?

Is it as simple as ‘Non iShares/Vanguard ETF’s will be in the plus tier’?

Obviously with the individual stocks we had the rationale behind it, with FTSE All Share, the AIM sector etc.

Really not happy about moving EQQQ to plus I can’t understand this decision, it’s a Nasdaq 100 index tracker, should you move this then there will be no Nasdaq index etf in the free universe. It’s not like its a special premium stock or niche ETF it’s one of the major index ETF’s on the app and now I’m reading it will be put behind a paywall. Really disappointed with this to be honest, seems poor decision making and can’t see anybody being happy about one of the main index ETF’s on FT being put behind a paywall.

FT is about making investing easy, investing in ETF’s which track major indexes is one of the main simple investment strategies and should be made easy for new investors. Now you’re putting one of the major index ETF’s behind a paywall it doesn’t seem like this is something that makes investing easy for newcomers and is actually restricting their ability to get into investing.

To be fair there’s one in the new bunch that is in the Free universe

Yea I saw that but then checked on the app and it costs £496.99 per share, so it’s not exactly easily accessible especially without UK fractionals.

Fair point, I didn’t check the price

A great job with the new ETFs.
I hold 4 ETFs in my ISA that are being moved over to Plus.
I can swap EQQQ for the slightly more expensive CNX1 , but ISPY and KLWD are important to me.

I may be inclined to move to Plus once I see some more features added

Yes, that’s the simple dividing rule. iShares and Vanguard together have an amazing range of ETFs, and this first batch of 100 ETFs has been a mere start. Our team have been quietly doing excellent technical work to enable Freetrade to add ETFs at scale. Expect a LOT of new ETFs in both the free plan and the Plus subscription plan.

We are aware of the popularity of Nasdaq 100 trackers, so we made sure there was an iShares version available starting today.

Specialist ETFs such as eSports or (in the future) niche commodities, etc are provided by smaller ETF outfits and we consider them Plus material.

We hear all the feedback, keep it coming.

I think the thing that annoys me most is that it feels like a bait and switch tactic ie come in, buy ETFs etc for free and a few months later - oh you want to buy some more of the same that will be ÂŁ10/month.

I completely understand and support FT in wanting to make money but this isn’t the solution (for me). Furthermore I can’t help wondering if further stocks and ETFs will get moved behind a paywall in the future. People often state how important trust is with their broker - well this doesn’t feel like a very trustworthy move.

Thank you!

It’s completely fine if your assessment is that Plus is not entirely there yet! Keep the feedback coming, and we’ll turn this into a membership that you’ll find worth paying for - and get the product, service and quality that you expect in exchange for your hard-earned £10. A service that is not a loss-leading acquisition ploy, but something reliable that you can count on.

Meanwhile, we are working to make the free plan super attractive as well, including adding a lot more stocks and ETFs to it - thousands in total.

Great to see more Acc ETFs! I’ll certainly think about moving from VWRL to VWRP. It’s a shame ESGB is locked behind the paywall, but probably in line with what most people expect these days.

It’s also good to see that the Stocks Universe Spreadsheet has already been updated - are there plans in the future to add the OCF values to it? I think with so many ETFs, it would be good to make it easier to compare them - unless there’s plans to do this in app eventually?

There are now.

This is data we have and we can potentially surface there as we agree assessing the cost is an important consideration.

I don’t think this was well communicated in the plus / stock split reasoning in the other topic. Unless I missed it? If I haven’t it might be worth adding to the to the other topic as well?

I think it’s a fairly reasonable split though ishares are very common, and the vanguard shares make it a competitive option over vanguard own platform (minus a few features Freetrade is lacking at the moment they im waiting for)
