Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Facebook

Earnings for these monoliths out later on this evening. Should be interesting …
NASDAQ is up today and expectations are high so dodgy figures will not go down well.

Had a quick look:

  • Facebook, Amazon, and Apple did well.
  • Apple announced a 4 for 1 stock split.
  • Surprised with Facebook, thought they’d have been affected.
  • Google reported a decline in search ad revenue.

What does apple stock split mean for the share price?

What means this split?

for every share you get 4 new shares with 1/4 of the value.

Hum…why are they doing it?

Oftentimes to make it more accessible to private investors. Who can buy shares that cost hundreds of dollars without fractional shares? Not many.

Sell the news? I wouldn’t as they will probably smash q4 too

Apple is unsoldable:innocent::cold_face::money_mouth_face:

Why are they doing it? because they are confident in their products and services and can make it rise again! this is a cash cow!

IPhones have a special place in the market, but China has advanced.

They are doing it because Apple is part of the Dow Jones 30 which is calculated based on a share price weighted basis (as opposed to market capitalisation weighted basis for the S&P500).

Almost every major US share brokerage company offers fractional shares now so accessibility is not really a factor here.

For those unfamiliar with Apple’s stock splits, its stock will have been split 224 times if you include the latest one  I remember that the price used to be above 400 before the 7-1 split.

From their investor relations page:

How many times has Apple’s stock split?

Apple’s stock has split four times since the company went public. The stock split on a 7-for-1 basis on June 9, 2014 and split on a 2-for-1 basis on February 28, 2005, June 21, 2000, and June 16, 1987.

On July 30, we also announced a four for one split of Apple common stock and trading will begin on a split adjusted basis on August 31, 2020.

I bought afew apple shares last year the price has risen alot over that time this is the first time i’ve experienced a stock split so will be interesting to see it and how it affects the shares if at all.

Now I understand why the value of Apple shares’s never passed £1000.
