While weā€™re at it, does someone have good insight as to why Freetrade at this stage would succeed given it is going up against a well capitalized:

  • Revolut
  • N26
  • Bux
  • Trading212

Iā€™m mostly interested in the rationale behind a stock trading up going up against ā€œSuper appsā€ than against other standalone stock trading apps. (So the first 2 above > the last 2)

Maybe the question here isnā€™t whether stand-alone brokers make sense, but whether it has built a platform and acquired customers other financial apps would be willing to pay for.

No reason why IPO should be the only route, a trade sale to the likes of a Monzo to enhance their customer value proposition may also be a viable option.

No insight just guessing, but here are some possible rationales vs super apps:

  1. the addressable market is big enough for several players. Stock-broking (or financial services more widely) donā€™t appear to be winner-takes-all markets, so Revolut and T212 and Freetrade and the more traditional brokers etc might all do well.
  2. specialisation is a competitive advantage. Focus on doing a smaller number of things well leads to higher product quality and loyalty, and a proprietary tech stack that increases gross margin because youā€™re using fewer intermediaries. (Counter argument: the cross-selling a super-app can do is a stronger competitive advantage.)
  3. geography is a barrier: they wonā€™t necessarily compete everywhere - eg N26 has already closed its service in the UK. (Counter argument: maybe geography is a temporary barrier: eventually theyā€™ll compete?)

Maybe you get Monzo shares in exchange for FT shares? Not that I would want those though.

I donā€™t want mine! If Iā€™d put that money in to FT it would have 3.5x (more when they announce the new valuation) instead it has 0xā€™d

I donā€™t get why price should be high - there is no desktop version, there is no even export to csv or xlsx!!

They have never advertised these features.

I donā€™t get why Apple is worth so much they donā€™t have VR Goggles or Reverse wireless charging ā€¦ they havenā€™t advertised these either.

The ā€œdesktop versionā€ thread has a lot of VERY passionate people on it who, despite using Freetrade on their phones/tablets, also think that itā€™s impossible to use FT unless thereā€™s a desktop version.

I was one of the first people to post on that desktop thread, I must admit though after 3 years of using the app I donā€™t care any more
