Investing resolutions:
Set up standing order payments to Investment accounts and Pension (done).
No FOMO investments. Ask yourself why are you investing in this company? Are the reasons based on common sense or are you gambling?
Life Resolutions:
Last year i decided to stop consuming so much news and dropped all Social media and i will be sticking to it, i can not tell you how much better i feel about life since doing this, i look at the headlines when i get up and watch a small amount of TV news, i donā€™t go near newspapers and try to avoid any clickbait websites, which is hard but always try to ask what are the real reasons this is being written.
Try to do stuff i have never done before, be a bit more adventurous.

Love the harvesting vegetables goal. Just cleared my garden and thinking of doing this also.

Good luck with your goals too!

Iā€™ve been growing veg for years, love it. There is something very special about serving up dinner and all the veg on the plate was in the ground only a few hours before. Or minutes if itā€™s something like a stir fryā€¦ Iā€™ve already sowed onion seed for this year.

My goal for the garden is to increase biodiversity. Iā€™ve been working on this over the past couple of years and the front garden is next to work on. Iā€™ll need to strip the turf and plant summer flowers. Sounds simple, but actually quite hard work. So itā€™ll be done a bit at a time.

Investment goals are to continue to increase investments by a steady amount every month. Iā€™m working with Ā£50 as a minimum amount as that fits with monthly budgeting. If it works out as planned, then I could have dividend income of over Ā£100 by the end of the year.

Personal goals - Iā€™m becoming more unhappy at work, so itā€™s either sort my head out, say something to the manager thatā€™s causing the problem, or find another job.
I also want to see if I can get some of my writing published.

Disclaimer - These are not resolutions, they are goals, and Iā€™m not going to beat myself up if they donā€™t work out.

I also want to see if I can get some of my writing published.

These all sound great. What do you write?

Stories! Fantasy and Sci-fi. Iā€™ve been self published before, years ago, but it needs a more professional approach now I think. So, polishing up some short stories to submit for writing competitions, anthologies and the like. And working on polishing a longer piece for submitting as a full novel.

I wonder who kept to the above?

As I lay here now in bed with a coffee whilst eating a ton of shortbread, I too think loosing a bit of chunk will be helpful!

Investments, well, Iā€™ve just started so it IS my mission not to stop - I good at bailing on stuff like this, especially when it involves not spending!

On the flip side, I feel like during my early investing months, Iā€™ve turned into a bit of a mentalist, overly obsessing on ā€˜have I picked the right fundsā€™ and scrutinising over every purchase - ā€œthat Ā£30 takeaway could have gone into my etf!ā€" ā€¦ hopefully we have all been there and it isnt just me!

Other than that, use this forum to get to know people and learn more!

Listen to more audiobooks to educate myself.

Hold me to account people!!

Result:

  • I read 25 books, 4 were non-fiction but only 14 were borrowed from the library
  • I donated Ā£280 this year
  • Iā€™m only at 2 months for my emergency fund
  • I successfully grew tomatoes and spinach, but have grown these before.

So I was close on some but basically failed to achieve any of them! :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Garden goal - Totally achieved that one - so many more plants added, and flowers from February through to November.

Investment goals - Yep, achieved that one too. Iā€™ve had just over Ā£100 of dividends over 2022, and continued to slowly grow my portfolio, which ended the year nicely in the green.

Personal goal - Well, kinda did that too. Got made redundant over the summer but as a result got head-hunted on the basis of my CV on Linkedin, and now work in a job I love with a team who appreciate and value my particular skillset.

Didnā€™t get any writing published.

Have we got a thread for this years goals/resolutions?

Well apart from my premium bonds- instead put into savings accounts due to increase in rates- not done too bad. No more properties for me this year. Just save, invest in shares where I can and try to upgrade the houses iv got to try reduce bills for me and the tenants.

I was not able to keep my resolution this year of maxing out my ISA. I had other high expenses this year :pensive:

Iā€™ve still got some time until April but donā€™t think I will achieve it.

Cycle less walk more. But not until I have all my wood stores full. Vary my walks much more. The dog clearly appreciates this.
See if I can sort out some more shoots next year. Most I used to do disappeared after COVID. The dog would appreciate that even more than more varied walks.
Get to the pub a bit more, twice a week isnā€™t really enough. The problem is the Ā£20 taxi fare home. So improving my stock picking is also needed.
Write a list of what I am going to grow and where I am going to grow itā€¦ and stick to it.
Buy a replacement cargo trailer for wood. The neighbour has welded the present one half a dozen times.
Replace my ebike will one with disc brakes. I only buy second hand so not an instant purchase and will allow me to procrastinateā€¦ foreverā€¦ unless a real monster bargain turns up.
Think of more resolutions to fail at prior to New year!

My main financial resolution is to build up 3 months expenses in savings (t bills).
Other than that I plan on topping up investments but also see the world.
I cannot stress to everyone how beneficial it is paying off your mortgage as soon as possible. The piece of mind it gives you is worth all the riches in the world.
