Push notification error - click does not take me to relevant in-app message

Hi FT Product Team,

Bug report: Twice in the last few weeks I have received a push notification to my iPhone (iPhone 12 Pro running iOS version 16.6.1) from FT with a CRM message that I have found interesting. When I click on the notification, the FT app opens, but I am left at the main/lobby screen rather than in the messaging area, and I can then not find the expected message when I go to the messaging area. It’s like clicking on the notification results in the message being deleted rather than opened.

I have exactly the same issue on Android. Get the notification and then the message isn’t present in the app. I’m running Android 13.

Thanks @jstar88 and @NeilR - we’ll look into this! Do you have an example of a push notification where this happened?

@EmilieG I had one a couple of days ago about new ETFs becoming available.

@EmilieG - The same one that @NeilR mentions - I saw the notification, clicked on it, and then could find no information in my messaging area.

Thanks @jstar88 @NeilR - not all push notifications will necessarily have an in-app message associated with them. The push notification about new ETFs is an example of this - it was just a standalone message, encouraging you to check out the “New ETF” collection on your Discover tab.

In the future, we’re looking to link these messages directly to the relevant collection when you open the app, so hopefully that will help!

Without functional deep-linking in place (going from push notification to your ETF collection, or a specific instrument), the current approach is effectively a broken user experience (which is how @NeilR & I experienced it).

I think having in-app messages as a destination is essential as a stop-gap measure until then. That in-app message can just be the same content as the push notification.

Not that you asked for my feedback… but I appreciate you listening. Cheers.

Thanks for the feedback @jstar88 - we’ll definitely keep this in mind for similar messages in the future.

im having the same issue. the higher order limits push notification that just came through went nowhere…

was it supposed to? ive no idea, it feels that its not clear if it should or not and leads to a little confusion.

it might be useful if all push notifications are stored somewhere and go there when clicked?

Same here, for example, notifications for divident income leads to a blank pink page.

@EmilieG please consider that how you want your users to use your app, and how users actually use your app, may not be the same thing.

Just to pop in and agree with this - it might not be a bug per se but it’s a bit of a pain.

As a user if I get a notification and it links back to a message (even if that message is quite marketing-y), it feels fair enough - that’s a legitimate notification since you’re notifying me of a message.

But a push notification that doesn’t link to a message feels much more like “we decided just to send you an ad”, which is not so great.

(Reading this thread has prompted me to look in the settings and turn off most of the in-app notifications so hopefully I won’t see them again anyway - but just wanted to leave my feedback anyway)
