The cat’s out of the bag, but here’s some more info on the first feature we’ve shipped from the Christmas List 2019
Love the new way the dividend payment is received. Great improvement.
How does US foreign dividend withholding tax look like on the activity feed? Is it rolled in together with the dividend?
It’s interesting how the dividend in the activity feed is dated by the payment date even if the ‘activity’ happened today. My most recent dividend arrived today but is in the past when it comes to the activity feed.
Once the activity feed has the detail of the dividend I would have thought the notification of the dividend in the activity feed should be the day in which the user receives the money in their account.
I’ve said ‘activity’ and ‘feed’ too much.
Hopefully it still makes sense.
Suspect there’s no right answer here.
I too would prefer the day the dividend is paid into my account be the point where it appears in the activity feed.
But I suspect there are others who would prefer their feed accurately reflects the day the dividend was paid out by the company, for accuracy of tracking/accounting.
Short of having the dividend appear in the feed the day it it paid in, with a description along the lines of “Your dividend from [date of dividend] has arrived”, would there be any way to satisfy both sides?
@HoldenCarver Ye I agree there. They should appear when they go ex-div but some how be “recognised” a different way when paid. Differentiated by colour or something. Some existing users might have better input on this
This is a nice step forward, just waiting for a dividend to come through and I will be able to comment further.
Also just to check in case I missed it anywhere will the information on our portfolio show the total dividend yield? I would also like the yield on cost to be presented as well
Received an email today about a divided but it’s not showing in the activity feed.
Customer support tells me apparently the email was sent prematurely
The dividend shows for the date that it was originally paid to freetrade. So maybe check further back in the activity feed. I had one that was paid to me in november showing on the 31.10 in the feed.
Yes, you’re right! The dividend appears back in 31/10 (the Payment date) but I just received the email today so I didn’t check further back. Thanks.
It’d have been nice if customer support had told me this, they just told me the email was sent in error.
So got my first dividend in the activity feed today and although it’s a good start in the right direction, I must say I’m not a fan just yet.
Why? Because previously when we were notified about dividends via messages we were given more info including:
- Who paid
- Ex-date
- Pay date
- Dividend amount per share (which included both the US rare and the converted UK rare)
- Confirmation that this is minus the 15% US tax
- Reminder how many shares we own and how much this works out as
Whereas now we just get:
- Who paid
- How much
So my suggestion:
If we tap on the dividend in the activity page we get a pop-up providing the information, in the same way that if we tap on a share we’ve bought in the activity feed it will show us the digital certificate (market buy contract note).
What does everyone else think?
Edit: just seen based on the above comments that we were supposed to get an email which I managed to find in my junk folder.
The email does provide the previous information which is great, but I’m not of the idea. I already get a notification in the app, I don’t need a second notification through my email too and it’s kind of redundant having the information in two separate places when all of it could just be included in one place: the app.
The less emails related to our portfolio the better imo, although anything extra is fine with me (e.g. the weekend read which was sadly retired).
Check your email (and spam box) linked to your freetrade account, you’ll have the usual details there!
I think they are going to improve the item in the activity screen… Or at least that was what was mentioned previously
Was just in the middle of editing my comment when you replied, but glad to hear they are looking to improve it!
Why is there a withholding tax? I thought that dividends in the UK were not taxed until £2000. Am I missing something…?
WHT is a different tax. Were these US dividends?
This is a recent email I received:
I made an edit to my post (have now put the edit in bold so hopefully others won’t miss it) saying I found the email in my junk afterwards, but I’d still prefer to have that info in the app rather than an email. Someone else said the FT team are looking into improving it so hopefully that will come with time
would also be nice if when you tapped on the dividend in the activity feed it gave you a break down how many shares paid a dividend and how much.
I agree that something should appear in the feed when a dividend goes ex.
