Britvic aren’t paying out til 2nd Feb 2022 but there ex-div is the 16th Dec. Everyone likes a soft drink!

I’ve never understood the long delay some company have between ex div and payment. 14 days should be enough time, plenty do it.

I guess they think it keeps people invested longer rather than moving in and out of positions

They collect the list on the record date, maybe +2 for any late trades.

Anyone else know if a genuine reason by companies do this?

Probably legacy holdover from the days when paper shares were common, more manual work had to be done, and banking timescales were longer. They never changed the date, whether because no one has thought about it, or for “tradition.”

With this post, are we saying that if we don’t have these shares that we should buy these shares in time to receive a dividend payout?

Yes you’ll need to own the stock the say BEFORE the ex-dividend date if you want to qualify for the payout.

Legal and General ex-div is the14th April 2022 and pay day 26th May 2022

You could in theory, however there is no particular benefit.

On the ex-dividend date, the share price should decrease by the value of the dividend (That it means by ex-dividend - the share price is trading without the dividend). So you would be selling the share at a loss and then you would get the dividend at a later date - end result being no overall change (and due to fx fees and withholding tax for US stocks, you could end up worse off).

If you are wanting dividend income, ideally you want to be holding on to those shares long term.

This is a pictorial example of @JimmyJ’s point from last week with royal mail. They announced a special dividend on top of the usual one which together we’re worth 26p and as if by magic on the dividend date the price finished -25p.

When ‘we’ value a company lots of things get taken into account including how much cash they have, if they agree to pay out £200m (for example) it’s fair to reduce the valuation by… You guessed it £200m.
